We get our stunning metal wall art from Beyond Borders, a company that connects Haitian artists to buyers around the world. Metal art first became popular in Haiti in the sixties and has now grown to be a widely practiced craft. If you walk down the streets of Croix-des-Bouquets, where the Beyond Borders artists work, you’ll hear the melodic clanging of metal on metal, the sound of empty oil drums being hammered and chiseled. With skill, the artists are able to bring forth designs like the Tree of Life, which are inspired by Haitian culture and nature.
Beyond Borders, a member of the Fair Trade Federation since 2007, employs one-hundred Haitian artists who are all paid a fair wage and provided safe working conditions. Despite the distance between the US team and the artists in Haiti, the connection remains strong. When the 2010 earthquake struck, Beyond Borders stepped in to help artisans rebuild their homes and continue to earn income while the rest of the country recovered.
