Kazi collaborates with artisans throughout Africa to bring us beautiful hand-woven baskets and wall art. Every item is a statement piece that will add a splash of color and modern design to your room. The artisans use locally grown sisal leaves, sweet grass, and raffia. First, they strip the sisal leaves to expose the white, sturdy threads within. Then the threads get soaked in natural dye. Once dried, the threads are woven around thin bundles of sweet grass, which creates a coil that eventually turns into a basket. This is an age-old weaving tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation.
Kazi, which means ‘work’ in Swahili, is passionate about creating job opportunities for women. Today, they work with 3,200 weavers who are paid fair hourly wages. Kazi COO Alicia Wallace says, "Fair trade isn't a movement. It's a call to action for each and every one of us to live responsible lifestyles, ensuring we're caring for those down the line whom many of our everyday choices affect."
