This item is from Natural Habitat, a distributor that partners with small-scale artisans in India. Founded in 2002, their purpose is to celebrate and preserve traditional techniques that have been passed down from one artisan to another for generations. All of the products made by Natural Habitat’s artisans are handmade with environmentally-friendly materials.

For several centuries, hand-block printing is a widely practiced art form in India used to decorate fabrics. Each color is printed with a different hand-carved wood block, with as many as 16 blocks used to create a five color design. A high level of skill and expertise is required for both the placement and pressure applied to each block. Natural Habitat strives to honor the traditional materials, methods and techniques used to create block printing but recognizes the need to integrate some modern adjustments to address current trends. To withstand present day washing care, colorfast requirements and provide a wider range of colors, non-toxic chemical dyes have replace vegetable pigments. Traditional methods paired with some modern adjustments not only enables artisans to use skills passed through generations, keeping the craft alive but also thrive with full time employment.
