What’s your name and role at HumanKind, and how long have you been part of the team?
LynAnne Wilton, Store Manager since 2013
How would you describe your personal style or taste when it comes to fashion, home, or gifts?
I love color and texture, especially in textiles! My home is styled with white walls and lots of bold colors, including a purple couch, textiles I have collected on my travels, and my own watercolors and embroidery. My husband and I love displaying art we have created and collected from our friends over the years, and our style is pretty eclectic! We don't spend a lot of time thinking about what goes together, but we choose whatever brings us joy.
What inspires your personal style or gift-giving choices?
My personal style is definitely inspired by handcrafted goods. My favorite pieces of clothing are items that have handcrafted patterns such as embroidery, block print and ikat. Sustainability is also a key factor and almost all of my clothing is either fair trade from HumanKind or purchased secondhand (shout out to my favorite consignment store, Finders Keepers in downtown SLO!). I love giving gifts that are handcrafted because they are so much more meaningful (and sustainable!) than corporate factory-produced goods.
What do you love most about working at HumanKind or being part of the fair trade movement?
I never thought I'd end up working in the retail industry, but once I learned that retail business can be a force for good, it became my career. At HumanKind, I love existing at the intersection of two distinct communities. The first is our downtown San Luis Obispo community which is filled with passionate, creative individuals who care about making this place beautiful and vibrant. The other is our global fair trade community, which is made up of retailers like HumanKind, our suppliers who are working directly with artisan communities, and the artisans themselves who are diligently working to support their families and keep traditional crafts alive. I am so lucky to be surrounded by inspiring people in both of these spaces.
What makes shopping at HumanKind different from other stores?
I think shopping at HumanKind is a joyful experience. Whether chatting with the kindest staff and volunteers or just perusing the shelves and finding treasures, it is a truly delightful space.
