Hand-Knotted Fair Trade Rugs Arrive to San Luis Obispo!
HumanKind Fair Trade announces the arrival of the Fair Trade Rug Event, taking place from March 26-30, 2025. This highly anticipated event will showcase an extraordinary collection of hand-knotted, Bunyaad rugs crafted by artisans in Pakistan. Held at HumanKind Fair Trade in downtown San Luis Obispo, this event offers a rare opportunity for customers to experience the beauty, quality, and ethical impact of fair trade rugs.
Bunyaad, a fair trade rug company, partners with more than 850 artisan families in Pakistan, providing them with sustainable, living wages and ensuring traditional rug-making techniques are preserved for future generations. These heirloom-quality rugs come in a variety of sizes, patterns, and colors, each representing the rich cultural heritage of the artisans who create them.
“These rugs are more than just beautiful home décor—they are a direct investment in artisan communities,” said LynAnne Wilton, Store Manager at HumanKind Fair Trade. “This event is a unique opportunity for local designers and customers to connect with fair trade and make a purchase that not only enhances their homes but also transforms lives. Every rug sold helps artisans earn a fair, living wage and continue their craft.”
In an exciting addition to this year’s event, Ehsan Chaman, Bunyaad’s Production Director in Pakistan, will be attending in addition to Yousaf Chaman, Bunyaad Director.
As the head of Bunyaad’s design and finishing department, Ehsan brings firsthand knowledge of the intricate rug-making process and will share insights on how customer feedback shapes future designs. His presence offers a unique opportunity for attendees to learn directly from the source and deepen their appreciation for the craftsmanship behind every rug.
Throughout the event, customers will have the chance to explore the rug collection, learn about the craftsmanship behind each piece, and discover how fair trade practices empower artisans. Shoppers can also receive expert guidance on selecting the perfect rug for their home.
“These rugs are much more than just amazing pieces of art for your floors. They represent lives changed through fair trade. Every Bunyaad rug artisan earns a living wage,” said Yousaf Chaman. “We know that with every rug we sell, we are empowering women, fueling artisans’ creativity and preserving their cultural heritage.”
Child labor is prevalent in the global rug industry, but Bunyaad ensures that every rug is crafted by fairly paid adult artisans. By providing a living wage, Bunyaad enables artisans to focus on quality craftsmanship, resulting in heirloom-quality rugs that last for generations.
“It’s quite simple. When artisans know they are paid for every knot they tie, they can take their time, pay attention to the fine details of these intricate rugs and use high-quality materials, all leading to producing a rug that will last for generations,” continued Yousaf Chaman.
Attendees can browse an extensive selection of Bunyaad’s hand-knotted rugs, ask questions, and even take home a piece of handcrafted artistry.
