Staff Favorites: Leah's Q&A

Leah Sofranko brings a heartfelt, nature-inspired perspective to HumanKind, where her love for meaningful connection, sustainability, and storytelling shines through in everything she does. From coastal-inspired living to thoughtful, experience-driven gift-giving, Leah shares how her personal values align with the mission of fair trade, and why every item at HumanKind feels like more than just a purchase.

Q: What’s your name and role at HumanKind, and how long have you been part of the team?

Leah: My name is Leah Sofranko, and I’ve been part of the HumanKind team since 2021. I first joined during the holiday seasons for a couple of years, which was such a joyful introduction, and I’m grateful to now be here year-round. I started as a Sales Associate and was recently promoted to Sales and Operations Associate, which has been an exciting next step in my journey with the team.

Q: How would you describe your personal style or taste when it comes to fashion, home, or gifts?

Leah: I’ve always loved finding pieces that carry meaning—whether it’s the story behind where something came from or a gift someone chose because it reminded them of me. Those connections make things feel truly special.

I also enjoy wearing recycled clothing, often borrowing from my daughter’s wardrobe, which adds a fun and sustainable element to my style. Over time, I’ve found some favorite pieces at HumanKind that I truly treasure.

At home, I love creating a space that feels warm, open, and welcoming—a place where friends and family can relax and feel at ease. Living in Morro Bay, I’m inspired by the coast and enjoy bringing those natural, calming elements into my home.

Q: What inspires your personal style or gift-giving choices?

Leah: I’m deeply inspired by the outdoors. I love hiking and spending time in nature, and that often influences the gifts I choose. I’m drawn to items that encourage others to step outside and enjoy the beauty around them—whether it’s a bird feeder, gardening tools, or a new plant to nurture.

Q: What do you love most about working at HumanKind or being part of the fair trade movement?

Leah: I feel incredibly lucky to work at HumanKind, where the team truly feels like a second family. One of my favorite parts of the job is learning about the artisans behind each product and sharing their stories with customers.

It’s meaningful to be part of something bigger—to support makers around the world and help their work reach our community. There’s a real sense of connection and purpose in everything we do.

Q: What makes shopping at HumanKind different from other stores?

Leah: Every item at HumanKind carries a story—each piece represents an artisan, a family, and a community somewhere in the world. Being able to offer those items means contributing to something positive and impactful.

What truly sets HumanKind apart, though, is the people. The staff and volunteers genuinely care—not only about the mission, but about every person who walks through the door. Whether we’re helping someone find the perfect gift or simply offering a warm, welcoming space, we strive to make each visit feel special and to brighten someone’s day.
