Every Purchase Has a Story. Every Dollar Creates Impact.

Our 2025 Impact Report is more than a collection of numbers – it's a reflection of the artisans, farmers, and communities your purchases help support. See how your decision to shop fair trade has created meaningful opportunities in 63 countries and helped us invest nearly $4 million into fair trade enterprises over the past 16 years.

IMPACT THROUGH THE YEARS

As a nonprofit store, we measure our impact not in gross sales or net profit, but in the funds we invest in fair trade enterprises when we purchase their goods. The dollars we spend are doing the work of creating fair and sustainable income for people around the world. As we grow, we are able to purchase more from these talented people, and we are able to fulfill our mission to a greater degree. See how much we have invested in fair trade over the years.

FAIR TRADE PRINCIPLES

 1. Cultivate New Market Opportunities

Many of our wholesale suppliers work with rural artisans who have limited access to a market. Matr Boomie, one of our biggest suppliers, works with about 40 artisan groups in India, many in small villages. These artisan villages are economically marginalized with limited career opportunities.

2. Develop Transparent & Accountable Relationships

In contrast to mainstream manufacturing, we share information about the artisan groups and producers we work with. While most mainstream brands attempt to keep their factories hidden and out of sight, we proudly list all of our suppliers on our website. Our goal is to showcase the work of the talented producers.

3. Build Capacity

Global Mamas, one of our long-standing suppliers, conducts on-the-job training on topics such as personal finance, business skills, leadership training, computer skills, and health education with their producers in Ghana. In 2022, Global Mamas led a training on “Gender Equality and Social Inclusion,” reaching 652 employees and community members who were encouraged to think critically about gender roles and challenge stereotypes.

4. Promote Fair Trade

Over the years, we have hosted several events to educate our community about fair trade including fashion shows and events that highlight artisan craftsmanship.

5. Pay Promptly & Fairly

In contrast to conventional factory production where payment is not made until the order is completed, fair trade enterprises generally pay for 50% of the order upfront before production has begun. This allows the producers to operate their business with consistent cash flow and be assured that they will be paid for their work. Once the order has been completed and shipped, the producer receives the remaining 50%.

6. Support Safe & Empowering Working Conditions

In Malawi, our supplier YEWO is providing safe and empowering jobs for local individuals who have an interest in making jewelry. In rural Malawi, unemployment is near 90%, and most people rely on subsistence farming or selling goods in the local marketplace. Almost all of YEWO’s employees have never held a job in the formal economic sector or had access to reliable income.

7. Ensure the Rights of Children

In all fair trade enterprises forced child labor is strictly prohibited. We believe that all children have the right to security, education and play.

8. Cultivate Environmental Stewardship

Our supplier Pebble exists to provide jobs for people who live in Bangladesh where natural resources are being depleted. In these areas, employment is limited, and people have no choice but to sustain their livelihoods by fishing or collecting firewood to sell. Both of these natural resources, fish and firewood, are being depleted. Pebble is providing alternative income sources by teaching women to crochet. With income from crocheted products, they do not have to rely on natural resources for their livelihoods.

9. Respect Cultural, Racial & Ethnic Identity

Many items in our shop are made by artisans who are using traditional craft techniques that have been passed down through generations.

HUMANKIND MISSION STATEMENT

To create a fair trade marketplace that supports the efforts of producers who live in communities that have been negatively impacted by inequality and lack of opportunity. We strive to inspire our community to think critically about their purchasing power and the impact it can have in our world.
