This Bolga Basket from African Market Baskets was made by a weaver and leather maker in Bolgatanga, Ghana. This specific artform– one that originated from and is unique to– the northern region of Ghana has been passed down for generations. The basket is made from Veta Vera grass (also known as elephant grass), a native plant that can be sustainably harvested. The weavers twist, spiral, and interlace the dyed Vera Veta grass fibers from the bottom up until a basket forms. The handle is then covered with locally, ethically made leather to prevent wear and tear. As a member of the Fair Trade Federation, they ensure that weavers and leather workers are paid fairly and provided with safe working conditions.
