Burlap & Barrel Sourcing

Burlap & Barrel are delicious, single origin spices sourced directly from small farms around the world. Their spices are harvested by hand, dried naturally, grown organically whenever possible, and transported directly to preserve freshness. Burlap & Barrel is a Public Benefit Corporation building new international food supply chains that are equitable, transparent and traceable.

The seeds used to create the Toasted Pepita Pumpkin Spice were sourced through Stony Brook, a producer working directly with farmers in the Finger Lakes region. For more than a decade, they’ve partnered with farmers to grow oilseed pumpkins, a variety cultivated specifically for its seeds rather than its flesh. The hulless, dark green seeds are harvested in the fall and pressed for oil, then the remaining seed material is gently milled on site into a fragrant, finely ground powder. By using the pressed seeds rather than discarding them, this process captures the full flavor of the pumpkin while making thoughtful use of the crop.
